Chapter History

The Eta Chi Chapter of the University of Rhode Island was colonized in 1986, and offically became a chapter on April 9, 1988 with the help of our big sister chapter Eta Gamma at Boston University. Since our inception, we have worked closely with our brother chapter Theta Upilson to serve the music department, and help improve the band.

National Mission Statement

We provide exceptional service to collegiate bands and promote equality and diversity, including and empowering women in the band profession. We cultivate leadership, educational achievement, music appreciation and community development.

We the sisters of the Tau Beta Sigma Chapter Eta Chi commit ourselves to the enlightenment of the band program and its members at the University of Rhode Island. Through our passion and dedication to the development of the band program, we help foster a diverse community of leaders and innovators in the field of music.

Our alumni association is an integral part of Tau Beta Sigma, promoting diversity efforts, social networking and assisting members in enhancing their professional leadership and employment possibilities after graduating from college. We are connected with music in the community which includes supporting music education at all academic levels.

Purpose Statement of Tau Beta Sigma

Tau Beta Sigma operates primarily as a student service and leadershisp recognition society whose chief aim is to assist the Director in developing the leadership and enthusiasm that he or she requires of his or her band. Our goals are not only to provide the band with organised and concentrated service activities, but to give our membership valid and wholesome experiences in organisation, leadership, and social contracts. The honorary nature of membership is based on our premise that "it is an honor to be selected to serve"- this band, its department of music, its sponsoring institution, and the cause of band music in the nation's colleges and university.
